Frequently Asked Questions

Do insurance companies cover the procedures?
Yes, many health plans do cover bariatric surgery. It's important to check with your individual plan for benefits and coverage.

How do I get started?
We offer free educational seminars each month that detail the surgical procedure and program requirements. Please click here or call 704-660-HLTH for more information about seminar dates and locations.

How can I prepare for surgery?
You will be given specific guidelines to follow. The goal is to prepare you physically and emotionally for the changes that will follow after the surgery. Read your manual and booklet, attend support group meetings and ask questions. The more you know and understand the better!

How long does the surgery take?
While surgery takes approximately two hours for the average patient, some procedures may take longer.

How many days am I in the hospital?
The average length of stay is one to two days.

How is the surgery performed?
Most patients will undergo laparoscopic surgery, where a small video camera and surgical instruments are inserted through very small incisions in the abdominal wall. In most cases, laparoscopic surgery produces less postoperative pain, less wound infections, fewer incisional hernias, and a faster recovery and return to normal activity. In some cases, an open procedure is necessary due to patient-specific risks. An open procedure involves one long incision to open the abdomen.

When can I return to work?
While most patients find themselves back at work within two weeks, the actual length of time will be determined by your surgeon. There are also some restrictions that apply.

What is the post-op diet?
There are five phases to the post-op diet. You will be given specific instructions for each stage. You will progress from clear liquids to full liquids, then to soft foods and finally to normal texture foods.

What about follow-up appointments?
You will be followed closely the first year after surgery and be expected to keep appointments with the surgeon, nurse, dietitian and nutritionist throughout the year.
