MOORESVILLE, NC (February 28, 2013) – Lake Norman Regional Medical Center hosted its NLC meeting on February 20, 2013. Since its start in September 2011, the NLC meets monthly to discuss topics focused on the nursing staff.
Nursing Leadership Council is part of Shared Governance Model. Shared Governance is an organizational framework in which professional autonomy is encouraged and supported. It empowers the professional nurse to contribute to the decision making process related to nursing practice, standards and procedures. Membership is composed of direct care nurses from all nursing departments, as well as, participation by the CNO and members of nursing leadership, as needed.
During the February meeting, the 12 council members in attendance discussed their accomplishments in 2012. These include: awarding three recipients for the DAISY Award, celebrating Nurses Day with a luncheon in May, establishing a NLC monthly newsletter, reviewing multiple nursing processes to improve care for patients, getting approval from administration for RNs and Surgical Techs to obtain continuing education hours, and assisting in the initiation of the newly developed Clinical Leader Program.
Already in 2013, the NLC has awarded a new recipient for the DAISY Award, collaborated with Infection Control in changing method of delivering water to patients to meet CDC guidelines, and hosted a North Carolina BON Practice Consultant to provide nursing staff with continuing education.
Future plans for 2013 include having a NLC co-chair attend Clinical Ops meeting monthly to communicate with directors of nursing units, planning a Team Building activity with staff during the 3rd quarter, and celebrating Certified Nurses Day on March 19 and Nurses Week in May.
