June 25, 2012 by Kendra Walker

Lake Norman Regional Medical Center hosts free monthly educational seminars, Understanding Surgical Weight Loss, the second Wednesday and the last Monday of each month from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. The next free seminar will be Wednesday, July 11th in The Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Lake Norman, 131 Medical Park Road, Suite 303, in the Medical Pavilion adjacent to the hospital. If you are at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, unable to sustain significant weight loss, have weight-related medical issues and are ready to make a life change to become healthier, Ryan Heider, MD, FACS, Medical Director of The Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Lake Norman, will explain the procedures and processes from the initial consultation to post-op nutritional counseling.  Presentations are followed by a question and answer period. Morbid obesity is a life-threatening disease that affects over 15 million people in the U.S. A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that bariatric surgery improved or resolved type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol in the vast majority of morbidly obese patients. Most patients had lost 55 to 70 percent of their excess weight one year after bariatric surgery.
