These revisions to the USDA Dietary Guidelines are designed to lower the risk for chronic disease, according to the University of Washington: Choose complex carbohydrates such as those made with whole-grain flour, brown rice and oatmeal instead of white flour. Use healthful fats (such as olive, canola, corn and peanut oil) instead of stick margarines, but use them sparingly. Select protein sources lower in saturated fat, such as fish, poultry, eggs and legumes, instead of red meat. Include low-fat dairy products in your daily diet.
