MRI

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a diagnostic procedure that combines a powerful magnet, radio waves and computer technology to provide detailed images of tissues, muscles, nerves and bones. Because MRI uses magnetic force and radio waves to create images, there is no radiation exposure during the procedure. MRI is often used instead of CT to study soft tissues or organs because bones do not obscure the organs and soft tissues as they do with CT imaging.

Advanced technology and imaging capability

At Lake Norman Regional Medical Center the staff in the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) department are all Registered Technologists with multiple years of experience. The facility at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center as well as the Imaging Center are both certified by the American College of Radiology. This certification ensures that our facility meets stringent guidelines for patient safety and image quality. The certification also ensures the patients that the radiologist reading the study is knowledgable in MRI.

Our magnet is 1.5 Tesla which is the gold standard of MRI magnets. The magnet is a short bore which means it is less than 5 ft long resulting in a less closed in feeling. Lake Norman also has the largest circumference magnet that is on the market today.

At the Lake Norman Women's Services Center we have the capability of Breast MRI. We are able to image both breasts at one time resulting in only one trip to have a complete procedure. These procedures are scheduled by the Nurse Liaison with Women's Services within a few days after your mammogram. After your breast MRI a radiologist that specializes in breast imaging will read your study.

MRI services include, but are not limited to, chest, pelvis, extremities, joint imaging, TMJ’s, head, spine, MRA’s, specialized vascular techniques, and much more. For your convenience, patients or procedures requiring IV conscious sedation will be arranged by the Radiology Department. MRI services are available on a scheduled basis. To schedule an appointment, call One-Call Scheduling at (704) 660-4920. We are now offering Saturday appointments.
