Treatment for Barrett's Esophagus
Barrett's Esophagus (a known precursor to esophageal cancer) is caused by long-term GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, and many patients diagnosed with GERD are at a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer. Lake Norman Regional Medical Center offers radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive system for treatment.
Radiofrequency ablation is similar to an upper endoscopy procedure with an addition of a step to ablate (remove through heat) the Barrett's tissue. This is an outpatient procedure performed through moderate sedation. Removal of precancerous tissue may reduce the chances of Barrett's esophagus progressing to a more serious stage.
